How to choose a luxury watch for women: classics from Rolex, Cartier and Patek Philippe, sizes, quartz or automatic, and what to check.

Rolex Lady-Datejust, reference 279135RBR

Choosing a luxury watch for yourself or as a gift is a decision you will live with for years. This guide covers the classic models women buy most, how to choose the size, quartz or automatic, what to know about diamonds, and what to check before you buy.

A note before we start: watch sizes are not really "men's" or "ladies'". Many women wear 36 to 41 mm watches, and many men wear 34 to 36 mm. Choose the size and style you love.

By the numbers: Switzerland exported CHF 25.9 billion of watches in 2024, 2.8% less than in 2023, in 15.3 million pieces (9.4% fewer), according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (swissinfo.ch, 30 January 2025).

The classic models

Rolex

  • Lady-Datejust (28 mm): the classic Rolex for small wrists, with a date and a Cyclops magnifier, in steel, Rolesor and gold, often with a fluted or diamond bezel.
  • Datejust 31: a slightly larger Datejust, one of the most popular Rolex sizes for women.
  • Oyster Perpetual (28, 31, 34 or 36 mm): the purest Rolex, with bright colored dials.

Cartier

  • Panthère: a slim jewelry watch on a supple bracelet, with a 1980s heritage.
  • Tank: the rectangular classic, from the Tank Must to the Tank Française on a bracelet.
  • Ballon Bleu: a round case with the crown protected by an arch and a blue cabochon.

Patek Philippe

  • Twenty~4: Patek's watch designed for women, in a rectangular or round case, on a bracelet.
  • Aquanaut Luce: the ladies' Aquanaut, often with a gem-set bezel.

Audemars Piguet

  • Royal Oak in 34 or 37 mm: the integrated-bracelet icon in smaller sizes.

Choosing the size

WristA comfortable starting range
Under 6 in (15 cm)26–31 mm
6–6.5 in (15–16.5 cm)28–34 mm
Over 6.5 in (16.5 cm)31–36 mm and larger

Rectangular and jewelry watches are measured differently: look at both width and length. Our guide on how to choose your watch size explains lug to lug and thickness, and the Real size button on our product pages shows the watch at its actual size on your screen.

Quartz or automatic?

Many ladies' models come in both. Quartz is precise, thin and always ready to wear, even if the watch stays in a drawer for weeks. Automatic watches wind themselves as you wear them, and are prized for their craftsmanship, but stop after a day or two off the wrist. Neither is better; choose by how often you will wear it. Our guide to automatic vs quartz goes further.

Diamonds: factory or aftermarket?

Diamond bezels and dials are popular on ladies' watches, and this is the most important thing to check:

  • Factory-set diamonds are set by the manufacturer and listed in the reference (on Rolex, letters such as RBR in a reference indicate a factory diamond setting).
  • Aftermarket diamonds were added later by a third party. They change the watch's value and, for many brands, end the manufacturer's service relationship.

Check the reference against the description. If a listing does not make the setting clear, ask us before you buy.

What to check before you buy

  • The full reference: it identifies the model, size, metal and, often, the dial and bezel setting.
  • Bracelet length: ladies' bracelets are often sized small; check whether extra links are included if you need more length.
  • Box and papers: important for value and resale; our listings state whether they are included.
  • Condition: look at the photos of the bracelet, clasp and bezel, and ask us for more if you need them.

Every watch we sell is checked by our specialist before it ships, and our guide to box and papers explains why the set matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best luxury watch for a woman?

There is no single best watch. The Rolex Lady-Datejust and Datejust 31, the Cartier Tank and Panthère, and the Patek Philippe Twenty~4 are among the most popular classics; choose the one whose size and style you love.

Can a woman wear a 36 mm watch?

Yes. Many women wear 36 mm and larger; it depends on your wrist and the look you want.

What does RBR mean in a Rolex reference?

On many Rolex references, letters after the number describe the setting: RBR indicates a factory diamond bezel setting. Check the full reference on the listing.

Is a quartz watch less valuable?

Not necessarily. Several iconic ladies' models are quartz by design. Value depends on the brand, model, metal and condition.

Do you sell ladies' watches with the box and papers?

Each listing states whether the original box and papers are included.
