The best luxury watches for small wrists are between 35 and 39 mm across, short from lug to lug, and slim. For a wrist under 6.5 inches, good choices include the Rolex Explorer 36, the Datejust 36, the Tudor Black Bay 54, the Cartier Santos Medium and the Nomos Tangente. Diameter is only the starting point: the length of the case and its thickness decide whether a watch sits well or overhangs.
This guide explains what to look for and then lists twelve watches we stock that fit a small wrist, at several prices.
What makes a watch fit a small wrist
1. Lug-to-lug length
This is the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs, and it is the measurement that matters most. If it is longer than the flat top of your wrist, the lugs hang in the air and the watch looks too big, whatever its diameter.
For a wrist of 6 to 6.5 inches, look for a length under about 47 mm. Under 6 inches, under about 45 mm. Our guide to lug-to-lug length shows how to measure your own wrist.
2. Diameter and bezel
A watch with a wide bezel has a smaller dial and looks smaller than its diameter. A watch with almost no bezel, such as a Nomos, looks larger. That is why a 39 mm dive watch can wear smaller than a 38 mm dress watch.
3. Thickness
A thick watch stands up from a small wrist and catches on cuffs. Under about 12 mm is comfortable; under 10 mm is ideal for a dress watch.
4. Lug shape
Lugs that curve downward wrap the wrist. Long, straight lugs stick out. Square and rectangular watches follow their own rules, because their corners take up more room.
5. Bracelet or strap
A bracelet that tapers toward the clasp makes a watch look finer. A thick strap adds bulk. On a small wrist, check that the bracelet can be shortened enough: ask us how many links are fitted.
Twelve luxury watches for small wrists
Rolex Explorer 36
The Explorer returned to its original 36 mm size in 2021 with the reference 124270. It is slim, simple and legible, with the 3, 6 and 9 dial, and it is the model watch for a small wrist: sporty, discreet and correct with anything. We have 70 Explorer watches in stock.
Rolex Datejust 36
The size the Datejust was created in. With a smooth bezel and an Oyster bracelet it is sporty; with a fluted bezel and a Jubilee it is dressy. See the Datejust 36 watches we stock, and our comparison of the 36 and 41.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36
The same case as the Datejust 36 without a date, in steel only, and the least expensive of the three. Browse the Oyster Perpetual 36.
Tudor Black Bay 54
A 37 mm dive watch in the style of the 1950s, thin and short, with 200 meters of water resistance. It is the best current dive watch for a small wrist. The 39 mm Black Bay Fifty-Eight is the next step up; our guide to the Black Bay 58, 54 and 41 compares them.
Cartier Santos, Medium
At 35.1 mm wide and under 9 mm thick, the Medium Santos is elegant, water resistant to 100 meters and comes with both a bracelet and a strap. Our comparison of the Medium and Large gives the full measurements.
Cartier Tank
The rectangular classic. A Tank is narrow, so it suits even very slim wrists, and it is thin enough to vanish under a cuff. We have 84 in stock, in several sizes; check the dimensions on each listing.
Nomos Tangente
The 35 mm Tangente is a favorite of buyers with small wrists who want a dress watch, with one caution: its long, straight lugs make it wear larger than it sounds. Our comparison of the Tangente and the Club explains.
Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 38
The Aqua Terra is made in a 38 mm size that keeps the Master Chronometer movement and 150 meters of water resistance of the larger watch. It is an everyday sports watch that is not oversized. See the Seamaster watches we stock.
Longines Spirit 37
A pilot-style watch with a chronometer-certified movement in a 37 mm case. The Spirit line also includes a 39 mm Zulu Time with a second time zone.
Tissot PRX 35
The integrated-bracelet design of the PRX in its smaller size, with a quartz or an automatic movement. Because the bracelet hardly bends where it meets the case, the 35 mm is the right choice for a small wrist; the 40 mm wears large. Our PRX buying guide covers the choice.
Hamilton Khaki Field 38
The 38 mm Khaki Field Mechanical is slim, light and inexpensive, and its field-watch design looks right at a small size. See our Khaki Field buying guide.
Grand Seiko hand-wound models
Several Grand Seiko dress watches with hand-wound movements, whose references begin SBGW, measure about 36.5 to 37.3 mm and are among the best-finished small watches at their price. Browse the Grand Seiko watches we stock.
Watches to approach with care
Some popular watches are harder to wear on a small wrist:
- Integrated-bracelet sports watches in 40 mm and above. The first links do not bend, so the watch is effectively longer than it measures.
- Square watches over about 38 mm, for the same reason.
- Thick chronographs and deep-rated dive watches. Height is as hard to hide as width.
- Watches with long, straight lugs, even at modest diameters.
None of these is forbidden. Some people like a large watch on a small wrist. But if you want a watch that looks as though it was made for you, start with the measurements above.
How to measure and compare
- Measure your wrist just above the wrist bone with a tape measure. Our guide to choosing your watch size shows how.
- Measure the flat width of the top of your wrist with a ruler. That is your limit for lug-to-lug length.
- Use the Real size button on any product page to see the case at its true size on your screen.
- Ask us. Tell us your wrist size and the watches you are considering, and we will tell you how they are likely to fit.
For first-time buyers, our guide to choosing your first luxury watch covers the other decisions.
Frequently asked questions
What size watch is best for a small wrist?
For a wrist under 6.5 inches, 35 to 39 mm in diameter, with a lug-to-lug length under about 47 mm and a thickness under about 12 mm.
Is 40 mm too big for a small wrist?
Not always. A 40 mm watch with short, curved lugs can fit a 6.25-inch wrist; one with long lugs or an integrated bracelet may not. Check the lug-to-lug length.
What is the best Rolex for a small wrist?
The Explorer 36, the Datejust 36 and the Oyster Perpetual 36 all suit small wrists. The Datejust 31 is an option for very slim wrists.
What is the best dive watch for a small wrist?
The 37 mm Tudor Black Bay 54 is the strongest current choice, followed by the 39 mm Black Bay Fifty-Eight.
Does a bracelet or a strap look better on a small wrist?
A tapering bracelet or a thin leather strap looks finer. A thick or padded strap adds bulk.
Can you tell me how a watch will fit before I buy?
Yes. Send us your wrist size and the watch you are considering and we will help. Every watch is checked by our specialist before it ships.
