Size is the most common reason a watch bought online does not feel right. A watch that looked perfect in photos can look too large or too small on the wrist, and the number on the listing, the case diameter, is only part of the story.
This guide explains how to measure your wrist, what case diameter, lug-to-lug and thickness mean, why the shape of a watch changes how big it looks, and how to use our Real size button before you buy.
Step 1: measure your wrist
Wrap a soft tape measure, or a strip of paper you then measure with a ruler, around your wrist just above the wrist bone, where you wear a watch. Note the measurement in inches or centimeters. Most adult wrists measure between about 6 and 8 inches (15 to 20 cm).
Some of our listings also state the bracelet's maximum fit, for example "Fits wrist size: up to 7.25 in". Bracelets can usually be shortened by removing links, and lengthened only if extra links are included.
Step 2: understand the three measurements
- Case diameter: the width of the case, usually measured without the crown. This is the number in the listing title, for example 41 mm.
- Lug to lug: the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs. It decides whether the watch overhangs your wrist. On most wrists, the lugs should not extend past the edges of the wrist.
- Thickness: the height of the case. A thick watch looks bigger and catches on cuffs; a slim one slides under a shirt.
Step 3: use this starting point
| Wrist | A comfortable starting range (round sports or dress watch) |
|---|---|
| Under 6.5 in (16.5 cm) | 34–38 mm |
| 6.5–7.25 in (16.5–18.5 cm) | 36–41 mm |
| Over 7.25 in (18.5 cm) | 40–44 mm |
This is a starting point, not a rule. Personal taste matters: many collectors with larger wrists love a 36 mm vintage-sized watch, and some people with smaller wrists prefer a bold 42 mm sports watch.
Why shape changes the size
Two watches with the same diameter can look very different:
- Wide dials and slim bezels look bigger. An IWC Portugieser or a Rolex Oyster Perpetual shows a lot of dial and wears large for its size.
- Thick bezels look smaller. A dive watch with a wide rotating bezel shows less dial and can wear smaller than its diameter suggests.
- Cushion and square cases look bigger. A 42 mm Panerai or a large Cartier Santos covers more of the wrist than a 42 mm round watch.
- Rectangular watches are measured differently. A Cartier Tank or a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is long rather than wide; look at both length and width.
- Integrated bracelets (Royal Oak, Nautilus, Overseas) follow the case closely and change how the watch sits.
Bracelet or strap?
A metal bracelet adds visual weight and makes a watch look larger. A leather or rubber strap makes the same case look smaller and lighter. If you are between two sizes, the strap version of the larger watch may be the right answer.
Use the Real size button
On our product pages, the Real size button draws the watch at its actual size on your screen once you calibrate it with a card. Hold your wrist next to the screen: it is the quickest way to compare a 36 mm and a 41 mm watch without trying them on. Our guide to the Datejust 36 vs 41 shows how much five millimeters change.

Frequently asked questions
What size watch should a man wear?
There is no single answer. A 36 to 41 mm watch suits most wrists between 6.5 and 7.25 inches; larger wrists often prefer 40 to 44 mm. Taste matters as much as wrist size.
What size watch should a woman wear?
Many women wear 28 to 36 mm watches; larger sizes are increasingly popular. Choose by wrist size and the look you like, not by labels.
Does a 40 mm watch look big?
On an average wrist, a 40 mm round watch looks balanced. With a wide dial or a bracelet it can look larger; with a thick bezel or a strap, smaller.
What is lug to lug?
The distance between the tips of the lugs, top to bottom. If it is longer than your wrist is wide, the watch will overhang.
Can a bracelet be resized?
Usually yes, by removing links. Adding length needs extra links; our listings and the box contents show whether they are included.
