Tudor Black Bay 58 vs 54 vs 41: Which Size Fits You?

Tudor Black Bay 58 vs 54 vs 41 compared. The 39 mm, 37 mm and 41 mm cases, their movements, clasps and references, and how to choose by wrist size.

Tudor Black Bay 54, reference 79000B, with a blue dial

The Tudor Black Bay 58, Black Bay 54 and the 41 mm Black Bay are three sizes of the same idea: a steel dive watch in the style of Tudor's 1950s models, water resistant to 200 meters. The Black Bay 54 is 37 mm, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight is 39 mm and the Black Bay is 41 mm. Choose by wrist: the 54 for small wrists or a vintage fit, the 58 for most people, the 41 for larger wrists or a bolder watch.

The names refer to years in Tudor's history, 1954 and 1958, and say nothing about size, which is why they are so often confused. We have 553 Black Bay watches in stock across all the versions.

All three are steel watches with a rotating 60-minute bezel, "snowflake" hands, a screw-down crown and no date. All three use movements made for Tudor with a power reserve of about 70 hours, enough to take the watch off on Friday and find it running on Monday.

Black Bay 54: 37 mm

The Black Bay 54 is named after Tudor's first dive watch, the reference 7922 of 1954, and it is the closest of the three to that original. At 37 mm it is small by today's standards, and it is thin, at a little over 11 mm.

Its details are deliberately spare. The bezel has no minute markings between the hours for the first quarter, as on the first Tudor divers, and the crown is small. It comes on a riveted-style steel bracelet or a rubber strap, both with Tudor's T-fit clasp, which lets you lengthen or shorten the bracelet by a few millimeters without tools.

The black version is 79000N, and there is a blue version, 79000B.

It suits you if your wrist is under about 6.5 inches, or if you like the way watches wore in the 1950s. Many women choose it too.

Black Bay Fifty-Eight: 39 mm

The Fifty-Eight arrived in 2018 and changed how people saw Tudor. Named after the year Tudor introduced its first watch rated to 200 meters, it brought a slimmer, smaller case to a line that had been 41 mm and fairly thick. At 39 mm across and just under 12 mm thick, it fits a wide range of wrists, and it remains the reference point for the modern dive watch at its price.

It is offered in the widest range of versions of the three: black with gilt details (79030N), navy blue (79030B), and others in bronze, silver and gold. We have 14 of the 79030B and 13 of the 79030N in stock.

One practical point: the Fifty-Eight was launched with a standard folding clasp, and the T-fit clasp appears only on some newer versions. If easy adjustment matters to you, look at the clasp in the photographs or ask us.

It suits you if you are not sure which size you need. It is the safe choice for wrists from about 6.25 to 7.25 inches.

Black Bay 41 mm

The 41 mm Black Bay is the original size of the modern line, first shown in 2012. The current version is a different watch from those early ones. Redesigned in 2023 with a burgundy bezel and joined in 2024 by an all-black version, it has a slimmer case than its predecessors, the T-fit clasp, and a choice of three-link or five-link bracelets or a rubber strap.

It is also the most advanced of the three inside. Its movement, the MT5602-U, is certified as a Master Chronometer by the Swiss institute METAS, which means it is tested for accuracy within 0 to +5 seconds a day and for resistance to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss. These watches carry the new, longer style of reference, such as M7941A1A0NU-0001, which our guide to Tudor reference numbers explains.

Older 41 mm Black Bay watches, with references such as 79230, are thicker and do not have the METAS certification or the T-fit clasp. They cost less pre-owned, so check the reference to know which generation you are looking at.

It suits you if your wrist is 7 inches or more, or if you prefer a watch with more presence and the newest movement.

How they wear

Diameter is only part of fit. Three other measurements matter:

  • Thickness. The 54 and the Fifty-Eight are the slimmest and slide under a shirt cuff. The current 41 mm is slimmer than the older 41 mm watches and still the tallest of the three.
  • Lug-to-lug length. This is the distance from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom ones, and it decides whether a watch overhangs your wrist. It grows with the case, so the 54 is the shortest.
  • Bracelet width. The bracelet is 20 mm wide at the case on the 54 and Fifty-Eight and wider on the 41 mm, which adds to the visual weight.

If you can, measure your wrist and compare. Our guide to choosing your watch size shows how, and the Real size button on each product page displays the case at its true size on your screen.

Which is the best value?

Prices follow size and generation more than you might expect. The Fifty-Eight has the largest pre-owned market, so there is the most choice and it is the easiest to sell. The 54 is newer and there are fewer of them. The current 41 mm costs the most new, because of the METAS-certified movement.
