Tudor Pelagos FXD in titanium, reference M25707B/26-0001

Tudor makes two families of dive watch. The Black Bay looks back: domed crystal, snowflake hands, the proportions of Tudor's divers from the 1950s to the 1970s, in polished and brushed steel. The Pelagos looks forward: matte titanium, a ceramic bezel with luminous markings, and more water resistance. In our stock the Black Bay starts at $2,025 and the Pelagos at $2,785.

Weight and feel

Titanium is the Pelagos's defining feature. It is noticeably lighter than a steel watch of the same size and has a darker, matte grey color. People who dislike heavy watches love it; people who like a watch to feel substantial sometimes find it too light.

The Black Bay has the weight and shine of steel. The Black Bay 58 in particular is praised for its proportions: 39 mm across and slim enough to wear every day.

Choice

The Black Bay family is far larger: three case sizes, GMT and chronograph versions, steel, bronze and two-tone. The Pelagos line is small and focused: the 42 mm, the Pelagos 39, a left-hand-crown LHD, and the fixed-lug FXD developed with the French Navy.

Which should you buy?

Choose the Pelagos if you want the most capable, most modern Tudor diver, you prefer a light watch, and you like a purely functional look.

Choose the Black Bay if you want vintage character, more sizes and colors to choose from, or a watch that dresses up more easily.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tudor Pelagos better than the Black Bay?

It is more capable on paper: titanium, 500 m of water resistance and a self-adjusting clasp. The Black Bay is the more versatile and more popular watch. Neither is better in quality; they are built to the same standard.

Is the Pelagos too big?

The 42 mm Pelagos wears smaller than its size because titanium is light and the case is slim for a 500 m watch. If you want something smaller, the Pelagos 39 is 39 mm.

Does titanium scratch easily?

Titanium marks a little more easily than steel, but the Pelagos's matte finish hides wear well, and light marks blend in over time.

Which holds its value better?

Both hold value well for their price. Steel Black Bay 58 references are the easiest to resell because demand is widest.
