The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is the purest Rolex: no date, no rotating bezel, no complications. Just the Oyster case, a self-winding movement and a dial. That simplicity, and the bright colored dials of recent years, have made it one of the most popular ways into the brand.
This guide explains the sizes, the dial colors, the references, how the Oyster Perpetual compares with the Datejust, and what to check before you buy.
By the numbers: Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate Rolex's 2023 sales at CHF 10.1 billion, a retail market share of just over 30% and more than the next five luxury watch brands combined. Rolex does not publish its own figures, so these are analysts' estimates (swissinfo.ch, 14 March 2024).
Why it is called "Oyster Perpetual"
The two words are the foundations of every Rolex. Oyster is the waterproof case Rolex introduced in 1926, sealed like an oyster shell. Perpetual is the self-winding rotor Rolex introduced in 1931, which winds the movement as you wear the watch. The Oyster Perpetual is the model that keeps only these essentials.
The sizes
| Size | Reference (current generation) | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 28 mm | 276200 | Small wrists, a discreet look |
| 31 mm | 277200 | Small to medium wrists |
| 34 mm | 124200 | A classic, slightly smaller unisex size |
| 36 mm | 126000 | The classic Rolex size, unisex |
| 41 mm | 124300 | Medium to large wrists, a modern size |
All current Oyster Perpetuals have a smooth bezel, an Oyster bracelet and water resistance to 100 m. The 41 mm uses the caliber 3230, with a power reserve of about 70 hours. Specifications differ by generation, so always check the exact reference on the listing.
The colored dials
Rolex has made the Oyster Perpetual its most colorful watch. Alongside classic black, silver and blue, recent generations introduced bright lacquered dials such as candy pink, turquoise blue, yellow, coral red and green on the 36 and 41 mm models, and a playful multicolored "Celebration" dial with colored bubbles.
Some colors are more sought after than others, and certain dials have been discontinued, which affects demand. The dial color is always stated in the listing title and specifications.
Oyster Perpetual vs Datejust
| Oyster Perpetual | Datejust | |
|---|---|---|
| Date | No | Yes, with the Cyclops magnifier |
| Bezel | Smooth | Smooth or fluted (gold) |
| Metals | Steel | Steel, Rolesor (steel and gold), gold |
| Bracelet | Oyster | Oyster or Jubilee (and President on gold) |
| Character | Pure, sporty, colorful | Classic, more dressy, more options |
Choose the Oyster Perpetual if you want the cleanest Rolex and a bright dial. Choose the Datejust if you want a date, a fluted bezel or a Jubilee bracelet.
What to check before you buy
- The full reference and dial: the reference tells you the size and generation; the dial color matters for value.
- Box, papers and date: the warranty card shows when the watch was sold. Our listings state whether the box and papers are included.
- Case and bracelet: the smooth bezel shows scratches more than a fluted one; look at the photos and ask for close-ups.
- Bracelet length: extra links are part of the full set.
Every watch we sell is checked by our specialist before it ships. If you are between two sizes, the Real size button on our product pages shows the watch at its actual size on your screen.
