The TAG Heuer Carrera and Monaco are both racing chronographs from the 1960s, and they could hardly look more different. The Carrera is round, restrained and easy to wear with anything; it comes in many sizes and versions, including watches without a chronograph. The Monaco is square, bold and instantly recognizable, and is essentially one watch in one size, 39 mm. Choose the Carrera for versatility and the Monaco if you want a design statement with a famous history.
We have 270 Carrera watches in stock, from $1,585, and 52 Monaco watches, from $2,640.

The Carrera
Jack Heuer introduced the Carrera in 1963. He was a racing enthusiast, and he named the watch after the Carrera Panamericana, a dangerous road race held in Mexico in the early 1950s. His aim was legibility: a chronograph a driver could read at a glance. He kept the dial clean and moved the scale to the sloping inner ring around it, which left the dial itself uncluttered.
That clarity is still the heart of the Carrera, and it explains why the line has grown so broad. Today it includes:
- Carrera Chronograph, the core of the range. The 39 mm "glassbox" models, introduced in 2023, have a domed crystal that curves over the edge of the dial, in the manner of the 1960s originals. Larger sports versions measure 42 and 44 mm.
- Carrera Date and Day-Date, three-hand watches from 36 to 41 mm, for buyers who like the design and do not need a stopwatch.
- Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon and other high-end pieces at the top of the range.
The current chronographs use TAG Heuer's own automatic movement, with a power reserve of about 80 hours. Earlier and less expensive Carreras use the Calibre 16 or Calibre 5, which are based on widely used Swiss movements and are simple to service.
It suits you if you want one watch for the office and the weekend. A 39 mm Carrera on a bracelet is among the most adaptable chronographs made.
The Monaco
The Monaco appeared in 1969 and was radical on two counts. It was one of the first automatic chronographs in the world, powered by the Calibre 11, and it was the first with a square, water-resistant case, which was a real technical difficulty at the time.
It became famous two years later, when Steve McQueen wore a blue Monaco in the film Le Mans. The blue dial, square case and white subdials have been tied to motor racing ever since.
Two details are worth understanding before you buy, because Monaco models differ in a way that is easy to miss:
- Crown on the left. The original Calibre 11 placed the crown on the left side of the case, with the chronograph pushers on the right. Monaco models with "Calibre 11" on the dial keep that layout. Their references begin CAW, such as CAW211P.
- Crown on the right. Monaco models with TAG Heuer's in-house Heuer 02 movement have the crown on the right, a different arrangement of subdials and a power reserve of about 80 hours. Their references begin CBL, such as CBL2111.
Both are 39 mm across. Because the case is square with flat sides, the Monaco wears larger than a round watch of the same width, and it is fairly thick. It suits a medium or large wrist better than a small one.
It suits you if you want a watch that looks like nothing else and are drawn to its racing history.
How they differ on the wrist
Fit. The Carrera's round case and curved lugs sit comfortably on almost any wrist, and you can choose the size. The Monaco is one size, sits flatter and squarer, and shows more of itself.
Under a cuff. A 39 mm Carrera slides under a shirt cuff. The Monaco's square corners and height make it a watch to be seen.
Strap. Most Monaco models come on leather or rubber, which suits them. If you want a steel bracelet, the Carrera gives you far more choice.
Legibility. Both are easy to read. The Carrera's dial is the calmer of the two.
Movements and value
Price depends more on the movement than on the model name. In both lines, watches with TAG Heuer's in-house chronograph movement cost more than those with the earlier calibers. As a rule:
- Three-hand Carrera models are the least expensive way into either family.
- Carrera chronographs with the earlier calibers come next.
- The Monaco, and the Carrera chronographs with the in-house movement, sit above them.
The Caliber line in the specifications of each watch tells you which movement it has. Our TAG Heuer buying guide explains the calibers in more detail.
What to check before you buy
- The reference, to confirm the model and movement. On a Monaco, CAW means the crown-left Calibre 11 and CBL the Heuer 02.
- The size, especially in the Carrera line, where it ranges widely. Our guide to choosing your watch size will help.
- The chronograph. Start, stop and reset should feel crisp, and the hands should return exactly to zero.
- Strap or bracelet, and whether the original buckle or clasp is fitted.
- Box and papers. The listing states what is included.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between the Carrera and the Monaco?
The shape. The Carrera is a round watch made in many sizes and versions; the Monaco is a square chronograph made in 39 mm.
Why is the crown on the left on some Monaco watches?
The original Calibre 11 of 1969 had its crown on the left. Monaco models marked Calibre 11 keep that layout; those with the Heuer 02 movement have the crown on the right.
Which Monaco did Steve McQueen wear?
A blue-dial Monaco with the crown on the left, in the 1971 film Le Mans. The current Calibre 11 models follow that design.
Is the TAG Heuer Monaco too big for a small wrist?
It can be. At 39 mm square it wears larger than a round 39 mm watch. A 39 mm Carrera is the easier fit on a small wrist.
Does the Carrera come without a chronograph?
Yes. The Carrera Date and Day-Date models show the time and date only.
Is Watchflix NYC an official TAG Heuer retailer?
