Which TAG Heuer to buy: Carrera, Aquaracer, Monaco or Formula 1. What each line is for, the movements, sizes and prices, and what to check pre-owned.

TAG Heuer is where many people start with Swiss watches, and it has real history behind it: Heuer has made chronographs since the 19th century and timed motor racing for decades. The range has four main lines, each with a clear job. We have 820 TAG Heuer watches in stock, from $420.

By the numbers: Switzerland exported CHF 25.9 billion of watches in 2024, 2.8% less than in 2023, in 15.3 million pieces (9.4% fewer), according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (swissinfo.ch, 30 January 2025).

The four lines

LineWhat it isIn our stock
CarreraThe racing chronograph, since 1963. Clean dial, also made as a three-hand watch.270 from $1,585
AquaracerThe dive and water-sports watch: rotating bezel, 200 m or 300 m.213 from $1,230
MonacoThe square chronograph of 1969, worn by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans.52 from $2,640
Formula 1The sporty entry line, in quartz and automatic.131 from $790

Carrera

Jack Heuer designed the Carrera in 1963 for drivers who needed to read a chronograph at a glance. It is still the most versatile TAG Heuer: the chronographs have the brand's in-house Heuer 02 movement on many current references (about 80 hours of power reserve), and the three-hand Carrera Date works as an everyday dress-sport watch.

Aquaracer

A proper tool watch at a moderate price: screw-down crown, unidirectional bezel, luminous markers. The Professional 300 is the classic size; the Professional 200 is slimmer. Many references come in quartz, which is accurate, light and inexpensive to own.

Monaco

One of the most recognizable watches ever made, and the first square water-resistant automatic chronograph. The Calibre 11 version keeps the crown on the left like the 1969 original; the Heuer 02 version has the crown on the right and a longer power reserve. It wears larger than its 39 mm suggests because it is square.

Formula 1

Colorful, robust and the least expensive way into the brand. A good first Swiss watch or a watch for sport.

Quartz or automatic?

TAG Heuer makes both, and the price difference is large. Quartz is more accurate and needs only a battery; automatic has the mechanical appeal and usually better resale. Our guide to automatic vs quartz covers the trade-offs.

What to check when buying pre-owned

  • Reference number on the caseback, matching the listing.
  • Movement type: the name on the dial ("Calibre 5", "Calibre 16", "Heuer 02") tells you what is inside.
  • Service history on older chronographs. See how often to service a watch.

Frequently asked questions

Is TAG Heuer a luxury brand?

Yes. It is a Swiss watchmaker owned by LVMH, positioned at the accessible end of luxury, below brands such as Omega and Rolex in price.

Which TAG Heuer is best for everyday wear?

The Carrera Date or an Aquaracer. Both are water resistant, legible and suit most settings.

Do TAG Heuer watches hold their value?

They lose more value than Rolex or Omega when bought new, which makes pre-owned and unworn examples good value. The Monaco and Carrera chronographs hold up best.

Are TAG Heuer movements in-house?

Some are. The Heuer 02 chronograph movement is made by TAG Heuer; many three-hand models use Swiss movements from Sellita or ETA, which are reliable and easy to service.
