Cartier Santos vs Tank: Which Cartier Watch Should You Buy?

Cartier Santos vs Tank compared: history, shape, sizes, movements, bracelets and water resistance, and which of the two Cartier icons suits you.

Cartier Santos de Cartier large model in steel, reference WSSA0018

The Santos and the Tank are Cartier's two most famous watches, and the question we hear most from Cartier buyers is which one to choose. Both are shaped watches from the early twentieth century, both are still made today, and both look right with a suit or a T-shirt. But they wear very differently.

This comparison looks at the Cartier Santos vs Tank on what decides a purchase: history, shape and size, movement, bracelet or strap, water resistance and everyday use. At the end you will find a clear recommendation.

Two icons from the same house

The Santos began with a friendship. The Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont asked Louis Cartier for a watch he could read in flight without taking out a pocket watch. The result, in the early 1900s, was a square wristwatch with a bezel held by visible screws, one of the first wristwatches designed for a man. Cartier began selling it to the public a few years later.

The Tank was designed during the First World War. Its long side rails, called brancards, are said to have been inspired by the outline of the tanks of the time, seen from above. The first Tanks were sold just after the war, and the design has been made in many versions ever since.

Shape and size: how they wear

The Santos is a square case with broad shoulders and a bezel that sits proud of the case. It looks substantial on the wrist, especially on the bracelet, and the large model has real presence. The medium model suits smaller wrists or anyone who prefers a classic size.

The Tank is a slim rectangle that sits close to the wrist and slides under a cuff. Because it is long rather than wide, a Tank can look larger than its width suggests. Many people choose a Tank a size up from what they would choose in a round watch, so compare sizes carefully, and use the Real size button on our product pages to see the watch at its actual size on your screen.

Movements: quartz, hand-wound or automatic

Most current Santos de Cartier models use an automatic movement. Several Tank lines are offered in quartz, which keeps the case thin and the watch ready to wear whenever you pick it up; some Tanks are hand-wound, and others are automatic. Neither is better in absolute terms: quartz is practical and precise, mechanical movements are prized by collectors. The Movement row in our specifications says which one you are buying.

Bracelet or strap

The current Santos comes on a steel, two-tone or gold bracelet, and Cartier designed it so that bracelets and straps can be changed without tools; many come with an extra leather strap in the box. The bracelet can also be adjusted without tools on many models. Check whether the extra strap is included: it is part of the full set.

The Tank is traditionally worn on an alligator or calfskin strap. The Tank Française is the exception, with an integrated metal bracelet.

Water resistance and everyday use

If you want one watch for everything, including washing your hands without thinking, swimming on holiday and wearing it every day, the Santos is the more robust choice. Most Tanks are dress watches with modest water resistance: keep them away from swimming and showers.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Santos if:

  • you want a Cartier for every day, on a metal bracelet;
  • you like a bolder, more architectural look;
  • you want more water resistance and an automatic movement.

Buy the Tank if:

  • you want the purest dress watch Cartier makes;
  • you prefer a thin watch that disappears under a cuff;
  • you like the idea of a quartz watch that is always ready to wear.

Or start with one and add the other. They are different enough that many Cartier collectors own both: the Santos for the week, the Tank for the evening.

Buying a Cartier safely

Whichever you choose, check the full reference (Cartier references start with W, such as WSSA0018), the case size, the movement, the condition grade and whether the box and papers are included. Frequently asked questions

Is the Cartier Santos or the Tank more expensive?

It depends on the version: metal, size and movement matter more than the model name. A steel Tank Must is one of the most accessible Cartier watches, while gold Santos and Tank models cost considerably more. Our listings show each price.

Is the Cartier Tank a men's or a women's watch?

Both. The Tank is made in several sizes and has been worn by men and women for a century. Choose the size that suits your wrist.

Can I swim with a Cartier Santos?

Current Santos de Cartier models are typically water resistant to 100 m, which is suitable for swimming. Check the water resistance on the listing, especially for older models.

Is a quartz Cartier worth buying?

Yes. Quartz keeps the Tank thin and always ready to wear, and it is a deliberate choice by Cartier on several lines, not a cheaper shortcut.

What is the difference between the Santos and the Santos-Dumont?

The Santos-Dumont is a thinner, dressier version, usually on a leather strap; the Santos de Cartier is the sportier model on a bracelet.
