King Seiko is the other great name of Seiko's history: for years it competed with Grand Seiko, and since its revival it has become a favourite of buyers who want Japanese finishing and vintage design at a lower price than Grand Seiko. We have 40 King Seiko watches in stock, from $1,495 to $3,390.
A short history
In the 1960s Seiko made watches in two separate factories that competed with each other. The Suwa factory created Grand Seiko in 1960; the Daini Seikosha factory in Tokyo answered with the first King Seiko in 1961. The rivalry pushed both to make more precise and better-finished watches.
The KSK of 1965 defined the King Seiko look: sharp, flat case surfaces polished to a mirror finish, wide faceted lugs and a crisp dial. King Seiko continued into the 1970s, including high-beat models, before the name was retired. Seiko revived it in the early 2020s, first in limited editions and then as a regular collection that reinterprets the KSK design.
The modern collection
The modern King Seiko watches are mostly 37 to 39 mm, in steel, with automatic movements, mirror-polished facets and textured dials in many colours. They sit between Seiko's Presage and Grand Seiko in price and finishing.
The Vanac name, from a 1970s King Seiko design with angular cases, has also returned in the modern line.

King Seiko or Grand Seiko?
Grand Seiko is the higher line, with Zaratsu polishing on every case, its own Spring Drive and high-beat movements, and higher prices. King Seiko offers a similar design philosophy and excellent finishing for much less. See our Grand Seiko buying guide and Seiko buying guide.
What to check before you buy
- Polished facets. The sharp, mirror-polished case surfaces show scratches; check them closely on a pre-owned watch, and avoid heavy re-polishing that rounds the edges.
- Bracelet. Ask how many spare links are included.
- Our pre-owned checklist covers the rest.
