Seiko makes everything in a watch itself, from the hairspring to the luminous paint, and has done since 1881. That is why a Seiko offers more watch for the money than almost anything else. The range is large, but three lines cover most buyers: Prospex for sport, Presage for dress, and 5 Sports for a first automatic. We have 815 Seiko watches in stock, from $145.

Prospex
"Professional Specifications". Seiko made Japan's first dive watch in 1965, and the Prospex divers descend from it. Collectors know them by nicknames: the cushion-shaped Turtle, the angular Samurai, the slim modern re-editions of the 1965 and 1968 divers. The line also includes the Alpinist, a field watch with an inner compass bezel, and the Speedtimer chronographs. Higher-end Prospex models use the 6R and 8L movements with up to about 70 hours of power reserve and sapphire crystals.
Presage
Presage is where Seiko shows off its dials. The Cocktail Time watches have deeply textured sunburst dials inspired by drinks. Above them are dials in enamel, Urushi lacquer and Arita porcelain, made by Japanese craftspeople: finishes that normally cost many times more. The Sharp Edged series is the sportier, angular Presage on a bracelet.
5 Sports
The "5" originally stood for five features, including an automatic movement, day and date display and water resistance. Today it is the easiest way to own a mechanical watch: a reliable automatic movement with hand-winding, 100 m of water resistance and dozens of colors, including GMT models. It is a common first step before a Prospex.
And beyond
- Astron: solar-powered and set by GPS, so it shows the right time anywhere in the world. We have 49 in stock.
- Grand Seiko is now a separate brand, with its own movements and finishing. See our Grand Seiko buying guide.
What to check when buying
- Reference number: Seiko references (for example SPB143 or SRPD55) identify the exact version. Search by reference if you know it.
- Movement: 4R movements are the entry level; 6R adds a longer power reserve; 8L is shared with Grand Seiko's base calibre.
- Crystal: sapphire on mid-range and up; Seiko's hardened mineral "Hardlex" on entry models.
- Limited editions: Seiko makes many. They are numbered on the caseback.

Frequently asked questions
Is Seiko a good watch brand?
Yes. Seiko is one of the few companies that makes every part of its watches itself, and its automatic movements are known for reliability.
What is the difference between Seiko Prospex and Presage?
Prospex is the sport line, led by dive watches rated to 200 m. Presage is the dress line, known for its dials.
Is Seiko 5 Sports a real automatic watch?
Yes. It has a self-winding mechanical movement that can also be wound by hand.
Are Seiko watches a luxury purchase?
Most are affordable. The upper Prospex and Presage models and limited editions reach luxury prices, and Grand Seiko competes with the Swiss luxury brands.
