Presage is Seiko's line of mechanical dress watches, and it is where the brand shows its craft: textured dials, lacquer, enamel and porcelain at prices well below Swiss equivalents. The line has three main groups. This guide explains each and how to choose.
Cocktail Time
The Cocktail Time watches were inspired by the drinks of the Japanese bartender Shinobu Ishigaki, and their dials are textured and colored to evoke them. Many three-hand models with a date use Seiko's automatic caliber 4R35, which can also be wound by hand and has a hacking seconds hand. These are the most popular Presage watches and the easiest way into the line.
Style60's
The Style60's watches take their look from the Crown Chronograph of 1964, Japan's first wristwatch with a stopwatch function, released the year Tokyo hosted the Olympic Games. Expect domed crystals, vintage-style markers and bold colors.
Craftsmanship series
The Craftsmanship watches use traditional Japanese crafts for their dials:
- Enamel, fired for a deep, glossy surface.
- Urushi lacquer, layered by hand.
- Arita porcelain, made by craftsmen in Arita and fired several times in a kiln.
These usually use Seiko's higher-grade 6R calibers, such as the 6R24 and 6R27, with longer power reserves and extra displays. They cost more, and many are limited editions.
How to choose
- Cocktail Time for an affordable, colorful dress watch.
- Style60's for a vintage look.
- Craftsmanship if you want a dial made by traditional Japanese methods, and the higher-grade movement.
Check the reference on the listing: it identifies the dial and movement, and Seiko often makes the same design in more than one size. Our general Seiko buying guide compares Presage with Prospex and 5 Sports.
