Grand Seiko is Seiko's luxury brand, known for dials inspired by Japanese nature, exceptional case polishing and three different movement technologies. It offers finishing that rivals Swiss watches costing much more. In our stock, Grand Seiko watches start at $880, with a typical price of $5,190 across 583 watches.
What makes Grand Seiko different
Dials. Grand Seiko dials are often textured to evoke Japanese landscapes and seasons: snow, birch bark, water, flowers. They change character as the light moves.
Zaratsu polishing. The cases are polished by hand on a tin plate to create mirror surfaces without distortion and razor-sharp edges between polished and brushed areas.
In-house everything. Grand Seiko makes its movements, cases and dials itself.
The three movement types
| Movement | How it works | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Drive (9R calibres) | Wound like a mechanical watch, but regulated by a quartz crystal through an electromagnetic brake | A seconds hand that glides smoothly, with accuracy close to quartz |
| Mechanical Hi-Beat (9S85 and 9SA5 calibres, 36,000 vibrations an hour) | A high-frequency automatic movement | Traditional watchmaking with excellent precision |
| 9F Quartz | Grand Seiko's own high-accuracy quartz movement | Very accurate and low maintenance, with the same finishing |
Spring Drive is unique to Seiko and Grand Seiko, and is one of the most interesting technologies in watchmaking.
The collections
- Heritage: classic designs based on the original Grand Seiko of 1960 and the "44GS" case. The most traditional choice.
- Evolution 9: a newer design language with shorter, wider lugs and modern movements.
- Sport: robust, water resistant, including divers and GMT models.
- Elegance: dress watches, often on leather straps, including manual-wound models.
What to check before you buy
- The reference (SBGA, SBGH, SBGJ, SLGH, SBGM…): it tells you the movement and collection.
- The dial: many models differ only by dial; look at the photos in different light and ask us for live photos.
- Titanium or steel: titanium models are lighter but scratch more easily.
- Box, papers and the warranty card.
Every watch we sell is checked by our specialist before it ships and comes with our 24-month warranty. Shop all Grand Seiko watches, or compare with Seiko and the Swiss brands in our watch price index.
Frequently asked questions
Is Grand Seiko a luxury brand?
Yes. Grand Seiko has been Seiko's top line since 1960 and became a separate brand in 2017. Its finishing compares with Swiss watches at higher prices.
What is Spring Drive?
A movement unique to Seiko: a mainspring powers the watch like a mechanical movement, but a quartz crystal and electromagnetic brake regulate it. The seconds hand glides smoothly and accuracy is close to quartz.
How much is a Grand Seiko?
In our stock, Grand Seiko watches start at $880, with a typical price of $5,190.
Is Grand Seiko better than Rolex?
They are different. Grand Seiko offers finer polishing and dial work for the money; Rolex has stronger brand recognition and resale value.
How often does a Grand Seiko need a service?
Grand Seiko generally recommends a service every three to four years for mechanical and Spring Drive models; quartz models need less. Our guide on how often to service a luxury watch explains more.
