Why the Nautilus costs what it does

It is the original luxury sports watch in steel. Designed by Gérald Genta and launched in 1976, the Nautilus brought the porthole-shaped case and integrated bracelet to Patek Philippe. Demand has been far higher than supply for years.

The 5711 was discontinued. Patek Philippe ended the steel 5711/1A in 2021, after a last olive-green version. A watch that can no longer be bought new from a retailer is priced by the market alone.

Complications and metals add to the price. The 5712 adds a moon phase and power reserve, the 5726 an annual calendar, the 5980 a flyback chronograph and the 5740 a perpetual calendar. White gold, rose gold and gem-set versions cost more than steel.

Condition and full set. Unworn watches with the original box, certificate or Certificate of Origin, and all bracelet links command the highest prices.

Nautilus or Aquanaut?

The Aquanaut, launched in 1997, shares the Nautilus shape but has a composite strap and a more casual character. In our stock it starts at $17,115, with a typical price of $104,720. Our comparison of the Nautilus and Aquanaut explains the differences, and the Patek Philippe buying guide covers the Calatrava and complications too.

What to check before you buy a Nautilus

  • The full reference and its suffix (for example -010 or -014): they tell you the dial and version.
  • Papers. The Patek Philippe certificate or, for recent watches, the warranty card; for older watches an Extract from the Archives can confirm the details.
  • The bracelet. The integrated bracelet stretches and scratches; count the links and look at the clasp.
  • Polishing. The Nautilus case has sharp brushed and polished surfaces; heavy polishing softens them and lowers the value.

Every watch we sell is checked by our specialist before it ships, and comes with our 24-month warranty.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Patek Philippe Nautilus?

In our stock, Nautilus prices start at $29,915, with a typical price of $120,035. The price depends mostly on the reference, the metal and the condition.

How much is a Nautilus 5711?

The steel 5711/1A-010 with a blue dial is listed from $85,315 in our stock when available. It was discontinued in 2021, so its price is set by the market.

Why is the Nautilus so expensive?

It is one of the most sought-after watches in the world, produced in limited numbers, and the best-known steel reference has been discontinued. Prices on the secondary market are far above the original retail price.

Is the Nautilus a men's or women's watch?

Both. Most references are 40 to 41 mm; ladies' versions such as the 7118 are 35.2 mm.

Can I see a Nautilus before buying?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp for live photos of the exact watch, or arrange to see it at our Los Angeles store.
