Patek Philippe Buying Guide: Nautilus, Aquanaut and Calatrava

Patek Philippe buying guide: the Nautilus, Aquanaut and Calatrava explained, with key references, sizes and complications, and what to check before you buy.

Patek Philippe Nautilus, reference 5712/1A-001, with a blue dial

Patek Philippe is, for many collectors, the summit of watchmaking. Founded in Geneva in 1839 and family-owned, it is known for its complications, its finishing and its long-term service of every watch it has made.

Most buyers begin with one of three collections: the sporty Nautilus, the casual Aquanaut, or the classic Calatrava. This guide explains each of them, the references you will see most often, and what to check before you buy.

By the numbers: Switzerland exported CHF 25.9 billion of watches in 2024, 2.8% less than in 2023, in 15.3 million pieces (9.4% fewer), according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (swissinfo.ch, 30 January 2025).

Nautilus

Designed by Gérald Genta and introduced in 1976, the Nautilus has a case inspired by a ship's porthole, with distinctive "ears" on each side, and a dial with horizontal embossing. It is one of the most famous luxury sports watches.

References you will see:

  • 5711/1A: for many years the defining steel Nautilus. Patek Philippe discontinued it in 2021.
  • 5811/1G: introduced in 2022, a 41 mm successor in white gold.
  • 5712/1A and 5712/1R: with power reserve, moon phase and date displays, in steel or rose gold.
  • 5726: the annual calendar version.
  • 5980 and 5990: chronographs; the 5990 adds a second time zone (Travel Time).
  • 7118 and 7010: the ladies' Nautilus, smaller and often with diamond-set bezels.

Choose it if you want the definitive luxury sports watch on an integrated bracelet.

Aquanaut

The Aquanaut, introduced in 1997, takes the Nautilus' rounded octagonal shape into a more casual watch. Its dial has an embossed grid pattern, and it is usually worn on a soft composite "tropical" strap, which matches the dial pattern.

References you will see:

  • 5167A: the classic steel Aquanaut, about 40 mm.
  • 5168G: a larger version, about 42 mm, in white gold.
  • 5968: the Aquanaut chronograph.
  • Aquanaut Luce models (such as the 5267/200A): the ladies' line, often with a diamond-set bezel.

Choose it if you want a Patek Philippe you can wear every day, with a relaxed, sporty look.

Calatrava

The Calatrava is Patek Philippe's classic dress watch, first introduced in 1932 with the reference 96. Its design follows the principle that form follows function: a round case and a clean, readable dial.

References you will see:

  • 6119: introduced in 2021, a 39 mm manual-wound Calatrava with a hobnail ("Clous de Paris") bezel.
  • 5227: an automatic Calatrava with an "officer's" case back, a hinged cover protecting the sapphire case back.
  • 5226G: a 40 mm white gold Calatrava with a textured dial.
  • 5524: the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, with a second time zone.
  • 4997/200: a ladies' Calatrava.

Choose it if you want a timeless dress watch that will look right for decades.

How to read a Patek Philippe reference

A Patek Philippe reference has four digits, sometimes followed by a slash and more digits, then letters for the metal and a dial code. For example 5167A-001:

  • 5167 identifies the model.
  • A is the metal: A for steel (acier), G for white gold, R for rose gold, J for yellow gold, P for platinum.
  • -001 identifies the dial and version.

So a 5712/1R is a 5712 on a rose gold bracelet, and a 5167A is the steel Aquanaut.

The Patek Philippe Seal

Since 2009, Patek Philippe's own quality standard, the Patek Philippe Seal, covers the whole watch: movement, finishing, accuracy and long-term serviceability. Patek Philippe is also known for servicing and restoring any watch it has made since 1839, which is part of why its watches are bought to be kept for generations.

What to check before you buy

  1. The certificate of origin (the papers) should match the reference and the movement and case numbers. Full sets matter more at this level than almost anywhere else. See why box and papers matter.
  2. The case: on Nautilus and Aquanaut models, look for polishing that has softened the sharp edges between brushed and polished surfaces.
  3. The bracelet or strap: check Nautilus bracelets for stretch; Aquanaut straps can be replaced, but an original strap is preferable.
  4. Complications: test every function: moon phase, power reserve, chronograph, annual calendar, second time zone.
  5. Service history: ask when it was last serviced, and by whom.
