The cheapest Rolex in the current catalog is the Oyster Perpetual, a steel watch with no date; its smallest sizes are the least expensive of all. Pre-owned, the cheapest Rolex watches are older ones: vintage hand-wound Oyster models, the 34 mm Oyster Perpetual and Date, earlier Air-King references and five-digit Datejusts. In our stock today, the least expensive current-generation Oyster Perpetual 36 starts at $5,235, and older Rolex watches start well below that.
Price is only half the question. A cheap Rolex that needs a service, or has replaced parts, is not cheap for long. This guide lists the least expensive ways into the brand and what to check with each.
The cheapest Rolex models, new and recent
Oyster Perpetual
The Oyster Perpetual is Rolex reduced to its essentials: the waterproof Oyster case, the self-winding movement, hours, minutes and seconds. It is made only in steel, with a smooth bezel and an Oyster bracelet, in 28, 31, 34, 36 and 41 mm. Rolex prices it by size, so the smaller the watch, the lower the price.
Nothing about it is second-rate. The 36 and 41 mm versions use the caliber 3230, with a power reserve of about 70 hours, and carry the same chronometer certification as every other Rolex.
We have 53 of the Oyster Perpetual 36 in stock, from $5,235, and 70 of the 41, from $6,290. One caution: certain dial colors are in strong demand and cost considerably more than the plain ones. If price is your priority, look at black, silver and blue. Our Oyster Perpetual buying guide explains the references.
Air-King
The Air-King is the least expensive of the Professional models. The current watch is 40 mm, with a black dial that mixes large 3, 6 and 9 numerals with a minute scale. We have 20 in stock, from $4,270, which includes earlier, smaller references.
Explorer
The 36 mm Explorer is the simplest Rolex sports watch and usually the next step up in price. We have 70 Explorer and Explorer II watches in stock.
Datejust in steel
A steel Datejust with a smooth bezel costs more than an Oyster Perpetual of the same size, because of the date and Cyclops lens. A fluted white gold bezel adds more. If the choice is between these two models, see our comparison of the Datejust and the Oyster Perpetual.
The cheapest pre-owned Rolex watches
Go back a generation or two and prices fall, sometimes by a great deal. These are the families to look at.
Five-digit Datejust: 16200, 16220, 16233, 16234
The Datejust 36 made from the late 1980s into the 2000s is the most affordable way to own the classic Rolex. It has a sapphire crystal, a quick-set date and a caliber, the 3135, that any Rolex watchmaker knows well. The bracelets of this period are lighter than modern ones, with hollow center links, which some owners find more comfortable and others find less solid. Our Datejust 36 stock starts at $3,515.
Oyster Perpetual 34 and Date 34
For decades the 34 mm watches, references such as 1002 and 15000, were Rolex's entry level. They are slim, and they suit smaller wrists and anyone who likes vintage proportions.
Older Air-King: 14000 and 5500
Before it became a 40 mm pilot's watch, the Air-King was a plain 34 mm watch with no date. It is one of the least expensive modern-era Rolex watches with a sapphire crystal.
Vintage hand-wound Oyster models
The Oyster Precision and Oysterdate Precision, references such as 6694 and 6426, are hand-wound watches from the 1950s to the 1980s. They are the cheapest Rolex watches of all, because they are small and manual, and many have had a long life. They can be charming, and they need the most care in buying.
Ladies' models
Older Lady-Datejust and ladies' Oyster Perpetual models in 26 mm, in steel or two-tone, are plentiful and inexpensive. See our guide to Datejust sizes for women.
What "cheap" really costs
Three things turn a low price into an expensive watch.
Servicing. A Rolex needs servicing from time to time, and it is not cheap. An older watch with no record of a recent service may need one soon. Ask when it was last serviced, and add the cost to the price if the answer is unknown. Our guide to how often to service a watch explains what is involved.
Replaced and aftermarket parts. Vintage watches often have dials, hands or bezels replaced over the years. A refinished dial or an aftermarket diamond bezel lowers the value sharply, and sometimes a low price is the sign of it.
Wear. Stretched bracelets, over-polished cases and worn crowns are common on inexpensive older watches. A bracelet in poor condition is costly to replace.
A slightly more expensive watch in honest, original condition with papers is almost always the better buy.
Is the cheapest Rolex worth buying?
Yes, if you choose it for what it is. An Oyster Perpetual or an older Datejust has the same case construction, the same standard of movement and the same name as models costing several times more. It will last decades with care.
It is the wrong choice only if you are buying it as a route to something else. If the watch you really want is a Submariner, buy the Submariner, or wait. Our Rolex price guide gives current figures for every model, and our article on whether a Rolex is a good investment explains what moves prices.
What to check before you buy
- The reference and year, to know which generation you are looking at. See our guide to reading Rolex reference numbers.
- Originality. Dial, hands, bezel and bracelet should be right for the reference. Our guide to spotting a fake Rolex lists the signs.
- Service history.
- The bracelet. Check for stretch and that the links are all there.
- Box and papers. Less common on older watches, and worth more when present.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest Rolex you can buy new?
The Oyster Perpetual, in its smallest size. It is the least expensive model in the current Rolex catalog.
What is the cheapest men's Rolex?
Among current models, the Oyster Perpetual 36 or 41. Pre-owned, an older Datejust 36, a 34 mm Oyster Perpetual or an earlier Air-King.
Why are vintage Rolex watches cheaper?
Many are smaller, hand-wound and less water resistant, and they may need servicing. Rare sports models are the exception and cost far more.
Is an Oyster Perpetual a real Rolex?
Yes. It has the same Oyster case, the same quality of movement and the same certification as other Rolex watches. It simply has fewer features.
Is a cheap pre-owned Rolex safe to buy?
From a seller who checks authenticity and describes the condition honestly, yes. Be cautious of prices far below the market: the usual reasons are a needed service, replaced parts or worse.
Are your Rolex watches authentic?
Yes. Every watch is checked by our specialist before it ships. We are an independent retailer and are not affiliated with Rolex.
