You can buy a pre-owned Rolex online from four kinds of seller: authorized dealers' certified pre-owned programs, independent dealers, marketplaces and private sellers. The safest choice is a seller who authenticates the watch, states its condition and papers clearly, offers a warranty and a return period, and ships fully insured. Whatever you choose, check the watch and the seller with the checklist below.
By the numbers: Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate Rolex's 2023 sales at CHF 10.1 billion, a retail market share of just over 30% and more than the next five luxury watch brands combined. Rolex does not publish its own figures, so these are analysts' estimates (swissinfo.ch, 14 March 2024).
Your options compared
| Seller | Advantages | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Authorized dealer, certified pre-owned | Checked by an official dealer, with a manufacturer-backed guarantee | Higher prices and limited choice |
| Independent dealer | Large choice, market prices, own warranty, often immediate shipping | Quality varies: check the authentication process, warranty and reviews |
| Marketplace | Huge choice | You buy from individual dealers or people, under the marketplace's rules |
| Private seller | Sometimes the lowest price | No warranty, little recourse, higher risk of fakes and stolen watches |
Watchflix NYC is an independent dealer: we are the online branch of Watchflix LA, a store in downtown Los Angeles. We are not an authorized Rolex dealer.
Checklist before you buy a pre-owned Rolex online
- The full reference and serial. The listing should state the reference; the seller should confirm the serial matches the papers. Our guide to Rolex reference numbers explains what they mean.
- Real photos of the exact watch. Ask for live photos of the watch you are buying, in daylight, including the case back and clasp.
- Condition, stated clearly. New, unworn, or pre-owned with a grade, and whether it has been polished or serviced.
- Box and papers. Whether the warranty card is included, and its date. See why box and papers matter.
- Authentication. Who checks the watch, and how. Read our 12 checks to spot a fake Rolex.
- Warranty. At least 12 months from an independent dealer.
- Returns. A clear return window and conditions, in writing.
- Shipping. Fully insured, with a signature or ID check on delivery.
- A fair price. Compare with market prices: our Rolex price guide shows live figures.
- A real business. A registered company, a physical address, a phone number that answers and genuine reviews.
Red flags
- A price far below every other seller.
- Stock photos only, and no live photos on request.
- Pressure to pay quickly, or by gift card, crypto or a payment method with no protection, to a private person.
- No address, no company name, no returns.
- Vague answers about papers, service history or the serial.
How we sell pre-owned Rolex watches
Every watch is checked by our specialist before it ships: the reference and serial against the papers, the case, bracelet, dial, hands and movement, a timing test and, for water-resistant watches, a pressure test. We state the condition and whether the box and papers are included on every listing, and we send live photos on request. Every watch comes with our 24-month warranty, ships free and fully insured in the US, and can be returned within 5 days. Read more on our authenticity page.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy a pre-owned Rolex online?
Yes, if you buy from a seller who authenticates the watch, gives a warranty and a return period, and ships fully insured. Use the checklist above.
How can I tell if a pre-owned Rolex is real?
Check the reference and serial against the papers, the details of the dial, crown and case back, and the movement. Our guide on how to spot a fake Rolex lists 12 checks. Buy from a seller who stands behind the watch with a warranty.
Are certified pre-owned Rolex watches worth the extra cost?
They come with a manufacturer-backed guarantee, which some buyers value. Independent dealers usually offer lower prices and more choice with their own warranty.
Should I buy a Rolex without papers?
You can, at a lower price, if the seller authenticates it. A watch without papers is harder to sell later.
Can I see the watch before buying?
At Watchflix NYC you can ask for live photos on WhatsApp, or see the watch at our Los Angeles store.
