Original, Service and Aftermarket Parts on a Pre-Owned Rolex

Original, service and aftermarket parts on a pre-owned Rolex: what each means, how they change the value, and how to ask a seller about them.

Three words come up again and again when you buy a pre-owned Rolex: original, service and aftermarket. They describe where a part came from, and they change what the watch is worth. This guide explains the difference and what to ask.

Three kinds of parts

  • Original: the part the watch left the factory with, or one correct for it at the time it was made.
  • Service: a genuine Rolex part fitted later, usually at a service. On a modern watch this is normal and expected. On a vintage watch, a later service dial or bezel is genuine but usually worth less than the original.
  • Aftermarket: a part not made by Rolex: a dial, bezel insert, crystal, crown or bracelet from another maker. Aftermarket parts lower the value, can affect water resistance, and a Rolex service center may replace them.

The difference collectors care about most: a genuine service part is not the same as an aftermarket part. One is Rolex; the other is not.

Where aftermarket parts usually appear

  • Diamond dials and bezels added after the watch left the factory.
  • Bezel inserts, especially on dive and GMT models.
  • Bracelets and clasps replaced with non-Rolex versions.
  • Crowns and crystals fitted during repairs outside the Rolex network.

What to ask a seller

  1. Are the dial, hands, bezel and bracelet original or genuine Rolex service parts?
  2. Has anything been added after the factory, such as diamonds?
  3. When was the watch last serviced, and where?
  4. Is there paperwork from that service?

Frequently asked questions

Is a Rolex with service parts worth less?

On a modern Rolex, genuine service parts are normal. On vintage watches, original parts are usually worth more than later service parts.

What does aftermarket mean on a Rolex?

A part not made by Rolex, such as an added diamond bezel or a non-Rolex bracelet. It lowers the value.

Will Rolex service a watch with aftermarket parts?

A Rolex service center may require aftermarket parts to be replaced with genuine ones before or during service.

How can I tell if a dial is aftermarket?

Ask the seller and have the watch inspected. Printing quality, markers and fit are checked against the reference.
