Rolex GMT-Master II: Pepsi vs Batman vs Sprite, Compared

Rolex GMT-Master II Pepsi vs Batman vs Sprite. The 126710BLRO, 126710BLNR and 126720VTNR compared, with the Root Beer and the gray and black version.

Rolex GMT-Master II, reference 126710BLRO, with a red and blue bezel

The Rolex GMT-Master II "Pepsi", "Batman" and "Sprite" are the same steel watch with three different bezels. The Pepsi (126710BLRO) is red and blue, the Batman (126710BLNR) is blue and black, and the Sprite (126720VTNR) is green and black with the crown on the left side of the case. Movement, size, water resistance and bracelet options are otherwise shared, so the choice comes down to color, and to whether you want the left-handed layout.

These nicknames are collectors' names, not Rolex's; the reference is what identifies the watch. We have 210 GMT-Master II watches in stock, including 26 of the 126710BLRO, 21 of the 126710BLNR and 20 of the 126720VTNR.

What all three share

Each is a 40 mm watch in Oystersteel with a two-color Cerachrom ceramic bezel marked for 24 hours, water resistant to 100 meters. Each uses the caliber 3285, with a power reserve of about 70 hours, and each is a Superlative Chronometer.

They also work the same way. The extra hand with the triangular tip goes round the dial once every 24 hours and is read against the bezel. The ordinary hour hand can be moved forward or back in one-hour jumps without stopping the watch, which is what you do when you land in a new time zone. The two colors of the bezel separate day from night for the second time zone. Our guide to the best GMT watches explains the function in more detail.

The Pepsi: 126710BLRO

Red and blue are the original colors of the GMT-Master, which Rolex introduced in 1955 for airline pilots. The red half marks the daytime hours and the blue half the night. No other version has that history, and for many buyers the Pepsi simply is the GMT-Master.

The steel Pepsi returned in 2018 with a ceramic bezel, at first only on the Jubilee bracelet; the Oyster bracelet was added as an option in 2021. Making a red and blue bezel in a single piece of ceramic is technically difficult, and the color of the red has been discussed by collectors ever since.

Choose it if you want the classic. It is the most colorful of the three and the one with the strongest link to the model's past.

The Batman: 126710BLNR

Blue and black was a new combination when Rolex launched it in 2013 on the previous generation of the watch, and it was the first two-color ceramic bezel the company made. The current reference arrived in 2019 on the Jubilee bracelet, with the Oyster added in 2021. Some collectors call the Jubilee version the "Batgirl" to tell the two apart.

It is the most discreet of the three. In low light the bezel reads as nearly black, and the blue appears as the light changes.

Choose it if you want a GMT-Master II that goes with everything, including a suit, and prefer a darker watch.

The Sprite: 126720VTNR

The Sprite, introduced in 2022, is the unusual one. Its bezel is green and black, and it is built as a left-handed watch: the crown is on the left side of the case and the date window, with its Cyclops lens, is at 9 o'clock instead of 3. Worn on the right wrist, the crown sits away from the hand; worn on the left, as most people do, it points up the arm, which many owners find comfortable.

Note the different reference: 126720, where the other two are 126710. The case and movement layout are specific to this model.

Choose it if you are left-handed and wear your watch on the right, or if you simply want the most distinctive GMT-Master II in steel.

Two more to know

  • 126710GRNR, gray and black, introduced in 2024. It is the quietest version of all. We have 19 in stock.
  • 126711CHNR, the "Root Beer": brown and black, in Everose Rolesor, which is steel with Everose gold. We have 24 in stock.

Jubilee or Oyster?

All the steel versions are offered on both bracelets, and the reference is the same for either. The five-link Jubilee is dressier and more flexible; the three-link Oyster is plainer and sportier. Our guide to Rolex bracelets compares them. Check the photographs on the listing to see which one a watch has, because the bracelet affects the price.

Which costs more?

Pre-owned prices move with demand, and the order among these three has changed more than once. As a rule the Pepsi has been the most sought after, with the Batman close behind. What to check before you buy

  • The reference: BLRO, BLNR or VTNR after the digits tells you the bezel. See our guide to reading Rolex reference numbers.
  • The bezel: it should turn in both directions with 24 clear clicks, and the colors should meet in a clean line.
  • The bracelet: Jubilee or Oyster, with all its links.
  • Box and papers: the warranty card carries the reference and the date of sale.
