Which Omega Seamaster should you buy? The Diver 300M, Aqua Terra, Planet Ocean, Seamaster 300 and Railmaster compared, with sizes and what to check.

"Seamaster" is not one watch. It is Omega's largest family, covering professional dive watches, elegant everyday watches and heritage reissues. Two Seamasters can look nothing alike and suit completely different people.

This guide explains each Seamaster line, who it suits, how to read the reference number, and what to check before you buy.

By the numbers: Switzerland exported CHF 25.9 billion of watches in 2024, 2.8% less than in 2023, in 15.3 million pieces (9.4% fewer), according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (swissinfo.ch, 30 January 2025).

A short history

Omega introduced the Seamaster in 1948, the year of the brand's 100th anniversary, as a robust, water-resistant everyday watch. Over the decades it became Omega's home for dive watches, from the Seamaster 300 of 1957 and the Ploprof of 1970 to the modern Diver 300M and Planet Ocean.

The Diver 300M became famous after 1995, when James Bond started wearing a Seamaster in GoldenEye. Today most Seamasters are certified Master Chronometer, a standard tested by the Swiss federal institute METAS that includes accuracy and resistance to strong magnetic fields.

Diver 300M

The Diver 300M is the Seamaster most people picture: a ceramic dive bezel, a dial with a laser-engraved wave pattern, skeleton hands and a helium escape valve at 10 o'clock. The current generation, introduced in 2018, brought back the wave dial and a Master Chronometer movement.

It comes mainly in 42 mm, in steel, two-tone, titanium and gold versions, with black, blue, white and other dial colors, on a bracelet or a rubber strap.

Choose it if you want one sports watch that can do everything, with a strong identity.

Aqua Terra

The Aqua Terra takes the Seamaster's robustness and puts it in a dressier case with a smooth bezel. Its signature is the horizontal "teak" pattern on the dial, inspired by the decks of sailing yachts.

It comes in a wide range of sizes, typically 28, 34, 38 and 41 mm, which makes it one of the most versatile Omegas for both men and women. The Aqua Terra Shades versions, introduced in 2021, add bright dial colors in smaller sizes. Some versions add a GMT function or a small-seconds layout.

Choose it if you want one watch for the office, dinners and weekends, without a dive bezel.

Planet Ocean

The Planet Ocean, introduced in 2005, is the more technical, larger Seamaster diver, water resistant to 600 meters, with an orange accent on many models. The Planet Ocean 6000M Ultra Deep, introduced in 2022, goes much further, with water resistance to 6,000 meters.

Choose it if you want a bold, serious dive watch with real presence on the wrist.

Seamaster 300, Railmaster and Ploprof

  • The Seamaster 300 reinterprets the 1957 original: a slimmer bezel, vintage-style hands and numerals, and a modern movement.
  • The Railmaster is designed for legibility and simplicity, inspired by watches made for railway workers and engineers.
  • The Ploprof 1200M ("plongeur professionnel") has an unmistakable asymmetric case and a bezel you unlock with a button, designed for professional saturation divers.

How to read an Omega reference

Modern Omega references have six groups of numbers, for example 210.30.42.20.01.001:

  • 210 identifies the collection (210 = Diver 300M; 220 = Aqua Terra; 215 = Planet Ocean).
  • 30 describes the case and bracelet material and type (for example steel on a bracelet).
  • 42 is the case diameter in millimeters.
  • The remaining groups describe the movement, dial color and the specific version.

The case diameter in the reference is a quick way to compare sizes between listings.

What to check before you buy

  1. The reference on the warranty card should match the watch.
  2. The bezel on divers should turn one way only, with firm clicks, and the ceramic insert should have no chips.
  3. The helium escape valve (Diver 300M, Planet Ocean): it should be screwed down. On recent models it is designed to be operated only when needed.
  4. The crown: it should screw down smoothly.
  5. The bracelet: on pre-owned watches, check for stretch and that the clasp's extension works.
  6. Box, papers and warranty: Omega's warranty card states the purchase date. See why box and papers matter.

Every watch we sell is checked by our specialist before it ships, including a pressure test for water-resistant watches.

Which Seamaster should you buy?
