Doxa is a dive-watch brand with one of the most recognizable looks in watchmaking: a cushion-shaped steel case, a bright orange dial and a bezel that carries a dive table. The names of the models and the dials can be confusing at first. This guide sorts them out.

The watch that started it

Doxa was founded in 1889 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Georges Ducommun. The watch it is known for came in 1967: the SUB 300, designed with professional divers. It had a bright orange dial for legibility under water and a rotating bezel with a no-decompression dive table, so a diver could read how long they could stay at a given depth.

The current range still follows that watch.

The four models

ModelWhat it is
SUB 300The original shape of 1967: a slim cushion case with a domed crystal, rated to 300 meters
SUB 300TThe sturdier version, with a thicker case and greater water resistance
SUB 200A simpler dive watch with a conventional case and bezel, the way into the brand
SUB 600TAn angular case in the style of the brand's 1980s models

Sizes and water resistance differ between them, so use the figures in the specifications of each listing.

What the dial names mean

Doxa names its dial colors, and the name is part of how each watch is listed:

  • Professional: orange
  • Sharkhunter: black
  • Searambler: silver
  • Caribbean: blue
  • Divingstar: yellow
  • Aquamarine: turquoise

So a "SUB 300T Caribbean" is the sturdier case with a blue dial.

Bracelet or rubber

Most models are offered on the steel bracelet, known for its small rice-grain links, or on a rubber strap in the color of the dial. They are separate references. Check which one is on the listing before you compare prices.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the SUB 300 if you want the original 1967 shape and the slimmest case.
  • Choose the SUB 300T if you want the sturdier build and more water resistance.
  • Choose the SUB 200 if you want the Doxa look in a more conventional dive watch.
  • Choose the SUB 600T if you prefer the angular case.

Frequently asked questions

Why are Doxa dials orange?

The SUB 300 of 1967 was given a bright orange dial so that it could be read easily under water. Orange is still the color most associated with the brand, and Doxa calls it Professional.

What is the difference between the SUB 300 and the SUB 300T?

The SUB 300 keeps the slim case and domed crystal of the 1967 original. The SUB 300T has a thicker, sturdier case and greater water resistance.

What does Sharkhunter mean on a Doxa?

It is Doxa's name for the black dial. Each dial color has its own name.

What is the scale on a Doxa bezel?

It is a no-decompression dive table. It shows how long a diver can stay at a given depth without decompression stops.
