Breguet carries one of the greatest names in watchmaking. Most buyers choose between two of its lines: the Classique, the dress watch, and the Marine, the sportier one. This comparison explains what they share and where they differ.
The watchmaker behind the name
Abraham-Louis Breguet opened his workshop in Paris in 1775 and is counted among the greatest watchmakers in history. He invented the tourbillon, patented in 1801, and many details are still named after him: Breguet hands, with their hollow moon tips, and the Breguet overcoil.
Breguet watches are recognizable by their guilloché (engine-turned) dials, their fluted case bands and those hands.

The Classique
The Classique covers dress watches with guilloché dials, from simple models to tourbillons. Many Classique dials are solid gold and hand-guilloché. Look at the photos for the pattern and its condition, because the dial is where the craft is.
With 30 meters of water resistance on most models, it is a watch for daily wear and rain, not for swimming.
The Marine
The Marine takes the same vocabulary into a larger case. Most are water resistant to 100 meters, and the line is made in titanium as well as gold. It suits buyers who want a Breguet for everyday wear.
What to check on a listing
- The case metal, which changes the price considerably.
- Hand-wound or automatic, for the Classique.
- The dial: pattern, color and condition.
- Box and papers. Each Breguet case carries an individual number, and the dial carries a hidden signature.
