Why the Royal Oak costs what it does

It started the luxury steel sports watch. Designed by Gérald Genta and launched in 1972, the Royal Oak put an octagonal bezel with eight visible screws, a "Tapisserie" dial and an integrated bracelet on a steel watch priced like gold. It remains Audemars Piguet's defining model.

Supply is limited. Audemars Piguet makes a relatively small number of watches each year, and the steel Royal Oak is hard to buy from a boutique without a purchase history.

The finishing. The case and bracelet alternate brushed and polished surfaces with sharp edges. Watches that keep these surfaces crisp are worth more; heavy polishing reduces value.

Size, movement and complications. The 41 mm Selfwinding, the 39 mm Extra-Thin "Jumbo", the 37 mm and 34 mm models, the chronograph and perpetual calendar are priced very differently.

Royal Oak or Royal Oak Offshore?

The Offshore, launched in 1993, is larger (usually 42 to 44 mm), thicker and sportier, often a chronograph with rubber strap and exposed screws on the pushers. The Royal Oak is slimmer and more versatile. Our comparison of the Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore goes into detail, and the Audemars Piguet buying guide covers the rest of the brand.

What to check before you buy a Royal Oak

  • The full reference, including the suffix for the dial.
  • Papers: the Audemars Piguet warranty card or certificate, with the serial matching the case back.
  • Bracelet stretch and links: the integrated bracelet tapers, so missing links are hard to replace.
  • Polishing: look at the bezel edges and the bracelet's brushed links in the photos; ask us for close-ups.

Every watch we sell is checked by our specialist before it ships and comes with our 24-month warranty.
