Glashütte Original Buying Guide: Senator, Pano, SeaQ and Sixties

Glashütte Original buying guide: the Senator, Pano, SeaQ and Sixties lines, what makes a Glashütte movement, and how to read the references.

Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph Panorama Date with a silver dial on a leather strap

Glashütte Original is one of the few watchmakers that builds almost everything itself, including its movements and its dials, and it does so in a small town in Saxony that has been making watches since 1845. For the level of finishing, it is often priced below the Swiss brands it competes with, which is why experienced buyers seek it out.

It is also a brand whose range can be confusing at first. The model names are German, the lines overlap, and the references are long. This guide explains the families, what sets the movements apart, and how to choose. We have 973 Glashütte Original watches in stock, from $2,640.

A short history

Watchmaking came to Glashütte, a town south of Dresden, in 1845. Over the following century it became the center of fine German watchmaking, with a style of its own.

After the Second World War the town's companies were merged into one state-owned business in East Germany, known by its initials, GUB. It kept making watches throughout that period, which matters to collectors: Glashütte Original can show an unbroken line of production in the town. After German reunification the company was privatized in 1994 under the name Glashütte Original, and since 2000 it has belonged to the Swatch Group.

What makes a Glashütte Original movement

Turn almost any Glashütte Original over and you will see the movement through a glass back. Several features identify it as a watch from this town:

  • The three-quarter plate. One large plate covers most of the movement, a construction that makes it rigid and is typical of Glashütte.
  • Glashütte stripes. The plate is finished with broad parallel lines, the local version of the stripes seen on Swiss movements.
  • The swan-neck fine adjustment. A curved steel spring, shaped like a swan's neck, used to regulate the watch.
  • A hand-engraved balance bridge. The small bridge over the balance wheel is engraved by hand, so no two are quite alike.
  • Blued screws and a rotor with a gold weight on the automatic movements.

The other signature is on the dial side: the Panorama Date. It is a large date shown by two discs set on the same level, so that the two digits sit side by side without a bar between them. It is easy to read and appears across the range.

Glashütte Original also makes its own dials, in a workshop in Pforzheim. That is the reason for the unusual colors and textures the brand is known for, especially in the Sixties line.

The lines, one by one

Senator: the classic round watch

The Senator is the traditional dress watch of the house: a round case, a symmetrical dial, Roman or Arabic numerals.

  • Senator Excellence. The core model, introduced in 2016 with the automatic Calibre 36, which has a power reserve of 100 hours. It is made as a plain three-hand watch and with a Panorama Date, a moon phase or a perpetual calendar.
  • Senator Chronometer. A hand-wound watch tested to the German chronometer standard, with a Panorama Date and a power reserve display.
  • Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. A flyback chronograph with the large date.
  • Senator Cosmopolite. A world-time watch for travelers.

Choose a Senator if you want one formal watch that will not date. If you are comparing dress watches, our guide to choosing a dress watch explains sizes and thickness.

Pano: the off-center dial

The Pano watches are the most recognizable. The hours and minutes sit in a circle on the left of the dial, the small seconds overlap it below, and the Panorama Date sits at the lower right. The layout looks free but follows careful proportions.

  • PanoReserve. Hand-wound, with a power reserve display.
  • PanoMaticLunar. Automatic, with a moon phase in place of the power reserve. It uses the Calibre 90-02 and is the best-known watch of the line.
  • PanoMaticInverse. The balance wheel and its engraved bridge are moved to the dial side, so you see them while you wear the watch.
  • PanoGraph. A hand-wound flyback chronograph.

Choose a Pano if you want a watch that could not be mistaken for anything else, and one that shows off what the brand does best.

Spezialist and SeaQ: the sports watches

The Spezialist collection holds the tool watches, and the one most buyers look for is the SeaQ, a dive watch introduced in 2019. It is inspired by a dive watch the Glashütte watchmakers built in 1969.

There are two different SeaQ watches, and the name alone does not tell you which you are looking at:

There is also a SeaQ Chronograph in the larger case. Compare the case size in the specifications before you decide; they wear very differently. Our guide to the best dive watches sets the SeaQ beside its rivals.

Vintage: Sixties and Seventies

The Vintage collection revives designs from the GUB years.

  • Sixties. A round watch with a domed dial and crystal and distinctive numerals. Each year the brand releases a Sixties with a new dial color, made for that year only, and these are the pieces collectors look for.
  • Seventies. A cushion-shaped, almost square case, best known as the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date.

Choose a Vintage model if color and character matter more to you than convention.

Ladies' watches

The ladies' line includes the Serenade and the PanoMatic Luna, often with mother-of-pearl dials and diamonds. They use the same in-house movements and finishing as the larger watches.

How to read a Glashütte Original reference

A reference such as 1-90-02-42-32-61 looks like a serial number, but it has a logic that is useful to a buyer:

  • The second and third groups are the caliber. 1-90-02 is a PanoMaticLunar with the Calibre 90-02; 1-36-01 is a Senator Excellence with the Calibre 36-01; 1-39-11 is the 39.5 mm SeaQ with the Calibre 39-11.
  • The remaining groups describe the case material, the dial and the strap or bracelet.

So two watches whose references begin with the same three groups share a model and a movement, and differ in metal, dial or strap. This is the quickest way to make sure you are comparing like with like. The reference is shown under the title of every watch on our site.

What to check before you buy

  1. The exact model. Names are similar: PanoReserve, PanoMaticLunar and PanoMaticInverse are three different watches. Use the reference.
  2. The case material. Many models are made in steel and in red or white gold, at very different prices. The specifications state the material.
  3. The size. Senator and Pano models are usually 40 to 42 mm; the SeaQ comes in 39.5 and 43.2 mm. Use the Real size button on the product page.
  4. Strap or bracelet. Most dress models are delivered on leather. A steel bracelet, where offered, adds to the price and is hard to add later.
  5. Box and papers. The listing states what is included. See our guide to box and papers.
  6. The movement in the photographs. The finishing is a large part of what you are paying for. If you would like more photographs of the movement, ask us on WhatsApp.

How it compares with its neighbors

Three well-known makers work in the same small town, and buyers often ask how they differ:

  • Nomos Glashütte makes slim, modern watches at lower prices. Our Nomos buying guide covers the range.
  • Glashütte Original sits in the middle, with traditional finishing, complications and a broad range in steel and gold.
  • A. Lange & Söhne works almost entirely in precious metals at the top of the market.

All three use the Glashütte name under the same rule: a large share of the value of the movement must be created in the town.

Frequently asked questions

Is Glashütte Original a luxury brand?

Yes. It is a fine watchmaker that designs and makes its own movements and dials in Germany, with hand finishing. It belongs to the Swatch Group, where it sits among the group's most prestigious brands.

What is the Panorama Date?

It is Glashütte Original's large date display. Two discs on the same level show the two digits side by side, without a dividing bar between them, which makes the date easy to read.

What is the difference between the SeaQ and the SeaQ Panorama Date?

The SeaQ is 39.5 mm, water resistant to 200 meters, with a small date. The SeaQ Panorama Date is 43.2 mm, water resistant to 300 meters, with the large date and a 100-hour power reserve. They use different movements.

Are Glashütte Original and A. Lange & Söhne the same company?

No. Both are based in Glashütte and share the town's watchmaking history, but they are separate companies with different owners.

Do Glashütte Original watches hold their value?

Prices of pre-owned watches change with the market, and no watch should be bought as a guarantee. Steel sports models and limited dial colors tend to be the easiest to sell again. Buy the watch you will enjoy wearing.

Is Watchflix NYC an official Glashütte Original retailer?

No. We are an independent retailer and are not affiliated with Glashütte Original. Every watch is checked by our specialist before it ships.
