How to Trade In a Watch Toward Another One

How a watch trade-in works: what your watch is worth, what you need to send, how the offer and the difference are calculated, and when selling outright is better.

A trade-in lets you put the value of a watch you own toward one you want, and pay only the difference. It is one transaction with one dealer instead of a sale and then a purchase. Here is how it works with us, and how to get the most for your watch.

How it works

  1. Choose the watch you want. On its page, select "Trade in toward this one". The form opens with that watch already attached.
  2. Tell us about yours. Brand, model, reference number, year, condition, and whether you have the box and papers. Add a few photos.
  3. Get a written offer. We reply in less than 24 hours with the value of your watch and the difference to pay. There is no obligation.
  4. Send your watch. If you accept, we email a prepaid, fully insured shipping label.
  5. We inspect it. Our specialist checks that the watch matches what was described.
  6. Complete the exchange. The agreed value comes off the price of your new watch, and it ships to you free and insured.

You can start from any watch page, or directly on Sell your watch.

What your watch is worth

A trade-in value is what a dealer can pay and still resell the watch. Four things set it:

  • Model and reference. Demand differs enormously between references. A steel sport Rolex is worth far more of its original price than a quartz dress watch.
  • Condition. Scratches matter less than you think; over-polishing, replaced dials and aftermarket parts matter more.
  • Box and papers. A full set is worth more, sometimes much more. Read why box and papers matter.
  • Service history. A recent service by the manufacturer or a good watchmaker supports the price.

How to get a better offer

  • Photograph it well. Dial straight on, both sides of the case, the clasp, the caseback, and the box and papers together. Daylight, no flash.
  • Give the reference and serial. They are on the papers and engraved on the watch. They let us value the exact watch rather than quote a cautious range.
  • Do not polish it first. A watch with honest wear is worth more than one polished badly.
  • Mention everything. Extra links, straps, service receipts. And any faults: they will be found at inspection, and an accurate description means the offer does not change.

Trade in or sell outright?

Trade in when you already know what you want next. It is quicker, there is one shipment each way, and you avoid selling to a stranger.

Sell outright when you want cash, or the watch you want is not in stock yet. Our guide to how to sell a luxury watch compares dealers, auctions and private sales, and the best time to sell covers timing.

What to send with the watch

The watch, its box and papers if you have them, and any spare links. Pack the watch in its box, pad the box inside a plain outer carton, and do not write "watch" or a brand name on the outside. Use only the label we send: it carries the insurance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade in any brand?

We consider most luxury brands. Send the details and we will tell you within 24 hours.

What if my watch is worth more than the one I want?

Your written offer shows the value of your watch and the difference, whichever way it goes. Ask us and we will explain how the balance is paid.

What if I don't accept the offer?

Nothing happens. The offer carries no obligation.

What if the inspection finds something I did not mention?

We contact you before anything else happens. Describing the watch accurately, with clear photos, is the best way to make sure the offer holds.

Do I need the box and papers to trade in?

No, but a watch with its box and papers is usually worth more.
