Luxury watches reach buyers through two kinds of sellers: authorized dealers, appointed by the brand, and independent dealers, often called the grey market. Both can sell genuine watches. The difference is mostly about warranty and price. This guide explains both honestly, including what it means when you buy from us.

By the numbers: Switzerland exported CHF 25.9 billion of watches in 2024, 2.8% less than in 2023, in 15.3 million pieces (9.4% fewer), according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (swissinfo.ch, 30 January 2025).

Authorized dealers

An authorized dealer is a retailer the brand has appointed to sell its new watches. Brands control which watches they receive and at what price. A new watch from an authorized dealer comes with the brand's warranty, activated at the sale.

Independent dealers and the grey market

An independent dealer sells genuine watches it has bought elsewhere: from collectors, from other dealers, or from authorized dealers. "Grey market" usually means new or unworn watches sold this way. Watchflix NYC is an independent dealer, not an authorized dealer of the brands we sell.

How manufacturer warranties work

This is the most important difference, and it varies by brand.

  • Rolex activates its guarantee at the sale by an authorized dealer. A Rolex guarantee that is running follows the watch to a new owner with its card.
  • Omega states that its warranty is valid only when the warranty card is dated and completed by an authorized Omega retailer.

So a watch bought from an independent dealer may still be covered by the manufacturer, if its warranty was activated by an authorized dealer and is still running, or may not be. Ask the seller exactly what applies to the watch you are buying, and read the listing.

Independent dealers usually give their own warranty instead. Watchflix NYC gives its own 24-month warranty on every watch.

How prices compare

Independent prices follow the market, not the brand's price list. For watches in high demand, such as many steel sports models, independent prices can be above the retail price, because authorized dealers cannot supply enough. For watches in lower demand, independent prices can be below retail.

What to ask before you buy

  1. Is a manufacturer's warranty included, and how is that shown?
  2. What does the seller's own warranty cover, and for how long?
  3. Are the box and papers included?
  4. What is the return policy?

Frequently asked questions

Are grey market watches genuine?

They can be. Grey market means sold outside the brand's authorized network, not fake. Buy from a seller you can verify.

Does a grey market watch have a manufacturer warranty?

It depends on the brand and on whether the warranty was activated by an authorized dealer and is still running. Ask the seller.

Is Watchflix NYC an authorized dealer?

No. We are an independent retailer. Every watch carries our own 24-month warranty.

Why can grey market prices be higher than retail?

For watches in high demand, authorized dealers cannot supply enough, so the market price rises above the list price.
