F.P. Journe Octa Automatique Lune in platinum

F.P. Journe is the most celebrated independent watchmaker of our time. François-Paul Journe designs every movement himself, makes his watches in Geneva in small numbers, and his pieces are among the most sought-after on the market. We have 28 F.P. Journe watches in stock, from $30,795 to $275,395.

A short history

François-Paul Journe, a French watchmaker trained in Paris, made his first tourbillon pocket watch by hand while still in his twenties. After years of making clocks and watches for collectors and other brands, he founded his own company in Geneva in 1999.

His first watch, the Tourbillon Souverain, combined a tourbillon with a remontoire, a device that delivers constant force to the escapement. It was followed in 2000 by the Chronomètre à Résonance, which uses two balances that synchronise with each other. Every watch carries his motto, "Invenit et Fecit": invented and made.

The collections

Chronomètre Bleu and Chronomètre Souverain. Simple time-only watches with exceptional movements; the Bleu, with its tantalum case and blue dial, is one of the most wanted independent watches.

Octa. A family built on one automatic movement with a long power reserve, with calendar, moon phase or power-reserve displays.

Élégante. An electro-mechanical watch, often for women, that stops its hands when it is not worn and resets to the correct time when picked up, giving it a very long battery life. In stock: 7.

Résonance, Tourbillon and Sonnerie. The great complications, made in very small numbers.

What makes a Journe different

  • Gold movements. Since the mid-2000s Journe's mechanical movements have used 18K rose gold plates and bridges, a rarity.
  • Everything designed in-house by Journe himself.
  • Small production, which makes most models hard to find new.

What F.P. Journe costs

Our prices run from $30,795 to $275,395, with a median of $102,035. Unworn pieces start at $35,155 and pre-owned at $30,795. Most Journe models sell above their retail price on the secondary market because demand far exceeds production.

References we stock most

What to check on a pre-owned F.P. Journe

  • Box and papers. At this level they matter; see why box and papers matter.
  • Case material. Journe makes the same model in platinum, gold, steel and tantalum; the material affects the price a great deal.
  • Movement. Ask for photos through the case back: gold movements should show no scratches from careless servicing.
  • Service history. Ask whether it was serviced by F.P. Journe.
